In order to get to know God personally, we must know what he has to say. The Bible is our best source. It says in 2 Timothy 3:16 “all scripture is breathed out by God.” It is not something that man thought of and wrote on his own. God’s word helps us by teaching us and correcting what we do. Reading the scriptures is of the utmost importance in our worship and communion with God. Without it we would never be able to fully know God.

As you start out, it is useful to ask God to open your heart and mind to his word for understanding and insight. Scriptures can often get confusing and misinterpreted. One of the great teachers of the early 1900s, A.W. Tozer would pray for God’s wisdom to help him understand his readings so as to be divinely instructed rather than humanly interpreted.
